Planning Your Maryland Family Photoshoot: A Season-by-Season Guide

As a Maryland family photographer for 15 years, I’ve seen how our state offers a beautiful backdrop for family photoshoots no matter the time of year. :) From the fresh beauty of spring to the cozy charm of winter, each season brings its own unique magic and considerations. I've had the joy of documenting families amidst all the beauty our state has to offer. This guide will walk you through what you can expect from a family photoshoot in each season, helping you plan for the perfect memories. And spoiler alert - if you don’t want to do photos in your own home or neighborhood, I looove doing family photos at Centennial Park, right in the middle of Howard County. It’s big enough to share with all the runners, book-readers, kids playing, and others spending time there year-round!

Spring: New Beginnings and Gentle Beauty

Spring in Maryland brings a lovely sense of newness with its returning colors and life. Average temperatures generally range from the 40s to 60s Fahrenheit.

What to Expect:

  • Scenery: You'll see flowering trees like cherry blossoms and magnolias, along with colorful tulips and daffodils. The landscapes gradually become green and vibrant again. Parks and gardens are especially pretty during this season.

  • Light: Spring light tends to be soft and warm, particularly in the early mornings and late afternoons, which is very flattering for photos.

  • Weather: Spring weather can be a bit unpredictable. It's good to be ready for cooler temperatures, especially early on, and the chance of rain. Wearing layers is always a smart idea! I keep my clear umbrellas in my trunk in case of any partially rainy photo sessions.

  • Wardrobe: Light and airy colors work nicely in spring. Think pastels, soft neutrals, and maybe some subtle floral patterns. Comfortable, lighter fabrics like cotton and linen are a good choice. (But ultimately, you do you.)

  • Considerations: Spring is a popular time for photos, so it's a good idea to book your photographer in advance. Also, if anyone in your family has seasonal allergies, keep that in mind when choosing a date!

  • Photo Ideas: Make the most of the blossoms! Photos under flowering trees, in fields of tulips, or with the fresh green background can be really beautiful. They capture the feeling of new growth and the gentle energy of the season.

Summer: Golden Light and Outdoor Adventures

Summer in Maryland is all about warm sunshine and longer days. Average temperatures typically range from the 70s to 80s Fahrenheit, and it often feels hotter with the high humidity.

What to Expect:

  • Scenery: Expect lush green foliage, vibrant blue skies, and opportunities for photoshoots at parks or beaches on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

  • Light: Summer light can be intense, especially during midday. While we can absolutely work with that, the "golden hour" – the hour or so after sunrise and before sunset – offers the most beautiful, warm, and flattering light.

  • Weather: Summer in Maryland is usually hot and humid. Plan for brief shade breaks (in your car’s AC, if needed), especially with young children, and bring plenty of water.

  • Wardrobe: Light and breathable fabrics are key. Think bright colors, playful patterns, and comfortable summer attire like shorts, sundresses, and t-shirts.

  • Considerations: Schedule your photoshoot for early morning or late evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Consider locations with shade - forested areas or even your home can be much nicer. Don't forget sunscreen and bug spray - and don’t worry, the sweat truly won’t show up as much as you’d expect!

  • Photo Ideas: Capture the joy of summer activities! Think candid shots of kids playing in a park, relaxed family portraits by the water, or fun-filled moments in a sunny field.

Fall: Rich Colors and Cozy Vibes

Fall in Maryland is truly gorgeous with its vibrant display of colorful foliage, which tends to peak in late October and early November. Average temperatures generally range from the 50s to 70s Fahrenheit, only cooling down near the end of September.

What to Expect:

  • Scenery: Expect fiery reds, oranges, yellows, and browns as the leaves change! Parks, forests, and orchards become stunningly colorful, and even local farms with blooming sunflowers, mums, and dahlias later in the season.

  • Light: Fall light is often warm and golden, creating a beautiful ambiance. The lowering angle of the sun as days get shorter adds a lovely depth and richness to your photos.

  • Weather: Fall weather is generally mild and pleasant, but temperatures can drop, especially in the evenings. Layering is still a good idea.

  • Wardrobe: Earthy tones can complement the fall foliage beautifully. Cozy layers like sweaters, scarves, and jackets add texture and warmth!

  • Considerations: Fall is the most popular time for photoshoots (at least for me and my clients!) due to the changing colors and anticipation for holiday cards with family photos included. Book the shoot well in advance to secure your date. Peak foliage times can vary each year, so staying a bit flexible with your schedule can be helpful, too.

  • Photo Ideas: Embrace the fall colors! Photos surrounded by vibrant leaves, in apple orchards, or with cozy blankets are perfect for this season. Go with the warmth and richness of autumn.

Winter: Muted Colors and Unique Beauty

Winter in Maryland offers a unique and often overlooked beauty for family photoshoots. Average temperatures typically range from the 30s to 40s Fahrenheit, and can drop lower, especially with wind chill. In-home photos (with a few photos in your yard) or greenhouse photos (at Rawlings Conservatory or the US Botanic Gardens in DC) are especially great in the winter.

What to Expect:

  • Scenery: While there might not always be snow, winter landscapes can be beautifully serene with bare trees, evergreens, and a soft light. If it does snow, the scenery becomes truly magical!

  • Light: Winter light is soft and diffused, creating a lovely, even glow. On sunny winter days, the light can be crisp and bright.

  • Weather: Winter in Maryland can really range from brisk to straight-up cold, with the possibility of snow and ice. Dressing warmly is essential. Go with loooots of thin layers!!

  • Wardrobe: Think cozy layers like sweaters, hats, scarves, and gloves. Rich jewel tones, deep neutrals, and even festive colors work well. Consider incorporating textures like knits and thick, wool coats.

  • Considerations: Be sure to dress warmly and comfortably. Again, consider indoor or partially indoor locations if the weather is going to be very cold. Embrace the unique beauty of the winter landscape :)

  • Photo Ideas: Think photos with warm blankets, festive attire (if it's near the holidays), or even playful snowball fights if there's snow.
